Flame Monitor with SIL 3 approval

In addition to the well-known standard EN 298, the safety-relevant examination of flame monitors and burner controls according to IEC 61508 is becoming more and more important. Many customers now request the additional appraisal of flame monitors and burner controls. This article compares both safety examination methods and explains their main features. Different solutions for safety devices for intermittent and continuous operation are presented. Although EN 298 and IEC 61508 cannot be compared directly at present, in general it can be said that devices for continuous operation should achieve a higher SIL level than devices forintermittent operation.
