An absorbent for the upgrading of biogas was developed on the initiative of WINGAS and in collaboration with BASF, BIS E.M.S. and Wintershall. In a pilot plant the absorbent PuraTreat® R+ was tested under real conditions to make biogas compatible for injection into the natural gas grid. The absorbent shows a high stability towards accompanying gases, especially oxygen, and provides an extremely low methane loss as well as moderate energy consumption for absorbent regeneration. The sour gases, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, are removed from the raw biogas in one process step. Due to its negligible vapor pressure, the losses of PuraTreat® R+ are extremely low. Thus, the design of the biogas upgrading plant is relatively simple, and significant operational advantages are achieved. Two upgrading plants, each designed for a raw biogas throughput of 6000 m³/h (NTP), have already been erected.
