The megatrend known as “Industry 4.0” is not clearly defined, and it is difficult, not least for this reason, to determine one’s own position in relation to it. It appears that thermoprocessing technology is no exception to this rule, if one merely considers the sheer quantity of information and discussion offerings pitched by the relevant industry associations. However, it can be shown that thermoprocessing technology has kept pace with developments since the microprocessor found its way into production equipment. Accordingly, no revolutionary new developments will be required at the engineering level to bring thermoprocessing technology into alignment with “Industry 4.0” standards.
