High pressure transmission pipelines are today regularly inspected for integrity assessment purposes. The major focus of the in-line inspection tools used today for this task is the detection, sizing and location of anomalies and defects in the pipe wall. For a reliable integrity assessment knowledge of the actual material properties of the pipeline being inspected must is necessary. This paper discusses the variety of inspection tools available today and introduces a new, specialized in-line inspection tool for the measurement of yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, as well as the identification of the long seam weld.
