The energy transition is fundamentally changing the way Liander, the largest gas and electricity distribution company in the Netherlands, manages and operates the gas distribution network. Confronted with an increasing share of renewable gases and a decreasing gas demand, the basic principles underlying the asset management decision making process for long term investments is shifting. The concept of a ‘smart gas grid’ is one of the strategic developments aimed at reducing costs and capital risks resulting from the transition. Furthermore, it accomplishes the necessary competences to operate and maintain an affordable and sustainable future energy system. This report illustrates the functioning and value of such a ‘smart gas grid’ as a new decision support tool for asset management at Liander based on quantitative risk analysis.
