As early as 2003, the European Commission ruled on the complete opening of national natural gas markets through Directive 2033/55/EC to ensure positive development of the internal energy market. In practice, industrial customers in Germany have been able to choose their gas supplier freely since 1 July 2004 and domestic customers have had free choice since 1 July 2007. Directive 2003/55/EC applies to the gas market, including natural gas, liquid natural gas (LNG), biogas, gas from biomass and every other type of gas that can be technically transported through the natural gas network.
