The avoidance of corrosion has been a prime consideration ever since man first began using metals. Corrosion is the undesirable destruction of a material, commencing from the surface, by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with its environment. The definition of the term has expanded considerably in recent years: whereas "corrosion" originally occurred only in metals, scientists and technologists nowadays also speak of corrosion of concrete and even of polymer materials. This article examines in greater detail the range of potentials for the prevention of the corrosion of metals in pipelines.
